UPTOWN ARTIST LOFTS

DETAILS

Located in downtown Michigan City, the Warren building was built in 1927 and was transformed into Uptown Artist Lofts nearly 90 years later. To determine the feasibility of creating affordable live/work spaces for artists, the Michigan City Preservation and Education Foundation partnered with Artspace, a national leader in arts-driven community transformation. Featuring 44 affordable units, classrooms, commercial and studio spaces, the project is situated in the Uptown Arts District, a six-block area along Franklin Street that is experiencing revitalization through arts-driven economic growth.

Focusing on interaction with the golf course and patron amenities, Kil Architecture worked closely with Tonn and Blank Construction, the design-build lead, to deliver a thoughtful design. Updated finishes, additional bar and kitchen spaces, new golf simulators and flex rooms, accessibility upgrades, and a revitalized outdoor terrace comprised most of the work for this project.
