Dan vonBergen graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture and Art in 1978, with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. During his time at university, he gained valuable experience working in architectural offices in Cincinnati, Baltimore, and New York. From 1979 to 1994, Dan worked in New York City on various commercial and residential projects, as well as new hotel developments.
In 1983, he became a registered professional in the state of New York. His outstanding work on the restoration of the Manhattan Savings Bank was published in Architecture Magazine in November 1991. During the mid-90s, he worked on designing new construction and rehabilitation projects for public school districts in upstate New York. From 1998, Dan began practicing in Indiana and has been working with Kil Architecture since 2001. Many of his projects include the investigation and adaptive reuse of older structures. Dan's main focus is on finding viable solutions for his clients, balancing efficient function, aesthetic integrity, and technical buildability. He presents his concepts and design options in clear graphic forms that enable rational decision-making.
Dan and his wife Catherine, who is retired from the St. Joseph Co. Public Library, have four children and eight grandchildren. They enjoy exploring the western United States and family camping trips.
