Director of Planning
Originally from Wisconsin, Sam has been with Kil Architecture since 2013. In 2012, he completed a post-professional Master’s in Architectural Design & Urbanism from the University of Notre Dame to supplement the undergraduate and graduate degrees he earned from Judson University. During university, he interned for three architecture firms, including the classical firm of Fairfax and Sammons, gaining experience in a variety of projects. His thesis at Notre Dame, centered on redeveloping a vacant 33-acre brownfield site in St. Louis, was published in Better Cities & Towns, NextSTL, and the Providence Journal. He was appointed as the Director of Planning at Kil Architecture in 2024.

Sam is passionate about traditional architecture and the creation and restoration of places worthy of the care of future generations. He has participated in several design charrettes and won awards in several design competitions. In addition to his architectural work, he has also designed posters for the South Bend Cubs and South Bend's annual arts festival, Art Beat.

He and his wife Elizabeth are restoring a 1922 craftsman house near downtown South Bend, and they have a dog named Junior, who often joins Sam in the office. Sam attends a neighborhood church in South Bend where he helps with music. He also plays the mandolin and guitar in a local band. He enjoys various outdoor activities and spends a lot of his free time paddling on the river, playing soccer, and traveling.
